State of the 4545 League
by @BigEvo8
And so a new season has begun. 44 new teams are currently battling it out for the coveted Lichess4545 League crown. At the end of week one, Negative Talent In Life are sitting pretty at the top after thrashing their opponents 8-0. Perhaps they have some talent after all?
In other news, the end of Season 21 review has taken place and a copy of the video can be found lower down in the ledger. If you wish to support the end of season review, it is possible to donate here: https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/8pSxWSsyrJ. As Ben Finegold often says: "no donation is too large".

Quarantine Liga
Update from @moistvonlipwig:
Sadly due to a lack of players the next two editions didn‘t go as great. Our short stay in the 8th division saw only 2 players participating initially. A couple of late joins couldn‘t prevent relegation. In the following tournament we could only field 4 players actually playing so we missed out on promoting. So if you have time on either Thursday or Sunday 18 UTC for two hours of blitz please help us out. The next edition will be here: https://lichess.org/tournament/oMdSbbrW

Fantasy League News
by @toni4127 (intro by @BigEvo8)
In putting together the end of season ledger for Season 21, I forgot to include the following write-up from toni4127 regarding the fantasy league. Apologies to toni4127 and the fantasy community. Here is the write-up in all its glory:
Optimal Chess: The Ideal Fantasy Team (Season 21)
Quick review of how #fantasy chess works, for those who don’t know:
- Join the #fantasy channel on slack
- Draft a player from each board before the start of the season
- The higher rated they are, the more expensive they’ll be
- Your picks can’t exceed a $16000 price threshold
- Every game they win or draw goes toward your score total
- Whoever scores the highest at the end of the season wins
Last season (S20) I put together a brute-forcing script to see what the optimal picks would have been in the #fantasy league. I ran it again at the end of this season (S21). The dream-team this season would’ve put up 56.0 points. Last season the optimal team only put up 52.0 points, so it’s a pretty considerable jump. The league grew quite a bit (you could say it went… viral), so we’re getting more outlier superstar players.
Example “optimal” team ($15,024):
- ghans81 (7.0 / $1424)
- Theknugdorf (6.5 / $1680)
- ************** (7.5 / $1996) (EDIT: sorry it was later found this pick was a cheater.)
- scarff (7.0 / $1552)
- mekumcu (6.5 / $1638)
- mixxanber (7.0 / $2399)
- JMHWSM (7.5 / $1359)
- Pe-lle (7.0 / $2976)
The score distribution for legal teams (within the price cap) looks pretty similar to last season. A gaussian centered around ~29 with a standard deviation ~5 points. However, the extremes are a lot more interesting.
Last season the lowest possible scoring teams put up 2.0 points. This season there were several possible perfect 0.0 combinations! I won’t call out names because it seems mean (but I would beg these people to find better hobbies than binge watching Simon Williams). As far as highest-scoring teams go, there’s a 20-way tie for the perfect 56.0. There were 20,047,612,231,936 possible unique team combinations. Of those 20 trillion teams, 9,818,445,957,852 (49%) didn’t exceed the price cap. This means you had a one in half-trillion chance of guessing one of these optimal teams. The winner of S21 #fantasy (Robzored) put up 46.5 points. If you squint at the distribution histogram you might just be able to make out a 46.5 bar. There were only 592,095,376 teams that scored higher. If you picked a random team, you’d have a ~1 / 16,582 chance of winning #fantasy this season, just to put how insanely high the 46.5 score is into perspective.
Thanks for reading! If you want to join the fantasy league, you should check out the #fantasy channel on Slack.
